21st Century Hipster Bikini Bottoms
In the 21st century, the hipster bikini bottom is perhaps the most popular style of bottom and comes in all shapes and sizes. From frilled, to boy-leg, string or rouched, the hipster bikini bottom is available on all levels of the swimwear market, and is a versatile style that will be popular for many seasons to come.

…of the style: If you have read any of the previous posts about bikinis, you will know that the now iconic two-piece bathing suit was introduced in the early 20th century and consisted of a longer top and high-waisted bottoms, that displayed barely an inch of midriff. Pretty much from that moment onwards, the waistline of the bikini bottom began to recede – slowly at first, thanks to public decency standards, but when the first two-piece to bear the name ‘bikini’ was unveiled in the mid 1940s, there was a significantly larger gap between top and bottom than there had ever been before.
Parts of Europe took quickly to the lower slung styles, however it took the majority of the world a decade or so to accept the hipster bikini and so it was the 1960s before the style began to gain popularity. The hipster style remained popular in the 1970s, but in the 80s the waistline rose again to the navel. By the mid-90s, the hipster bikini had experienced a resurgence and the style was once again a popular choice for women all over the world. Since then, the hipster bikini bottom has maintained a firm grip on the swimwear market and is one of (if not the) most popular styles for bikini bottoms.
In the 21st century, high-waisted bikini styles are certainly having a renaissance, however, the hipster is so firmly implanted in the swimwear market it is unlikely that the low slung style will be surpassed by any other look for a long time.
…of the name: The waistband of the hipster bikini bottom sits on the hip bones, hence the name.
There isn’t really a history of the hipster bikini bottom out there – the information I have garnered was from general histories of the bikini itself. For more information try Wikipedia, TIME, ELLE or the Fairchild’s Dictionary of Fashion
